Robbin Michael Wagner

Robbin Michael Wagner is one of the top fine art photographers in the Southeastern United States. He is the first and only photographer to be on permanent display in the Penthouse of the Ritz-Carlton Hotel. He wrote, along with Brooke L. Denman “Zaharr The Reader” and “The Contemptuous Ruby”. Mr. Wagner was born in Flint, Michigan in 1954 in the heart of General Motors. He spent his youth dancing in the Flint Ballet Theatre and acting in The Flint Community Players. He also acted in summer stock theater productions sponsored by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation. His first camera, an Agfa pop down bellows 620, was purchased at a flea market around the age of 9 for 25 cents. Mr. Wagner developed his roll film in old aluminum ice cube trays in the crawl space under the stairs in the house he grew up in. He made contact prints only with outdated Velox paper given to him by the local newspaper photography department. In 1973, at the age of 18, he left Flint and moved to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and did aerial photography as well as taught basic photography courses for a local camera shop in Deerfield Beach. He did portraits of senior citizens along South Beach. Mr. Wagner moved to San Francisco in 1975 and immediately began his photographic career shooting modeling portfolios for the Grimme Modeling Agency. His occasional teacher, famed environmentalist, Ansel Adams, was a major influence in his life. He opened his first studio at 2215 Filbert Street in the Marina District. Wagner left San Francisco in the late 70s and moved to New York City and became the fashion and beauty photographer for Wolfarhts Studio. He photographed table top setups for the studio’s only two clients, Sears and J.C. Penney. During this time he began as a test photographer for many of the modeling agencies in New York. In 1980, newly married, he put away his camera and endeavored to prosper in the corporate world and moved back to Ft. Lauderdale. He spent the next nine years away from the camera and became deeply involved in family and the business world. In 1989, the sudden death of his son was a turning point in his life and in his photographic career. Divorced in 1994, a single parent with two daughters, he left Florida and moved back to San Francisco and began in ernest to rekindle his passion. He opened up a small studio in Pacific Heights and began shooting fine art nudes. After two years in San Francisco, he moved one hour north to the small community of Bodega Bay. (Alfred Hitchcock’s Birds, 1963), the setting for his neo-noir, The Contemptuous Ruby. Mr. Wagner had an opportunity to relocate his studio to New Orleans in 1998. He owned and operated The FilmWorks Photo Studio & Gallery in The French Quarter. Hurricane Katrina temporarily forced his relocation back to California in August, 2005. He became bi-coastal, and went back to New Orleans on the 5 year anniversary to film the short version of “The Contemptuous Ruby” which was a major “hit” at the 2011 New Orleans Festival. The full length version of “The Contemptuous Ruby-Everyman’s worst nightmare….” is scheduled for production in 2013 in Breakwater Park, New Orleans, LA

Ra~ the fire breathing orb that chases away my primordial fear of the unknown. The burning, churning gaseous giver of life gently eases itself over the horizon each morning and assures me that fear of the known is more daunting than fear of the unknown. To think that somewhere on Earth, the sun; momentarily bleeds a golden hue of liquid color and gives mankind the benefit of yet one more day to contemplate why we are here.

Midnight at The Breakwater Studio.

Lake Pontchartrain began forming about 5,000 years ago when North American glacier melts caused the Mississippi River to swell and shift to the east. The river began depositing its sediments into the Gulf of Mexico, creating a broad delta which would later become Orleans, St. Bernard, and Plaquemines Parishes.

The delta grew slowly eastward over 2,000 years and eventually separated a large body of water from the Gulf. Native Americans called this body of water ‘Okwata’ meaning ‘wide water’, and they dwelled peacefully on its shores for centuries.

In 1699, Native Americans led the French settler, Pierre La Moyne, Sieur d’Iberville, on a journey through the area’s Lakes and bayous. Iberville marveled at Okwata and renamed it Lake Pontchartrain, after the French Minister of the Marine at the time, the Comte de Pontchartrain.

Lake Pontchartrain is just one part of a vast ecological system called the Pontchartrain Basin. Known for its slow flowing rivers and bayous, tranquil swamps, and lush hardwood forests, the Basin provides essential habitat for countless species of fish, birds, mammals, reptiles, and plants.

The famous wetlands and marshes that surround the Basin’s waters provide a beautiful setting for wildlife and are the heart of the region’s commercial and recreational fisheries.

The Pontchartrain Basin is also the center of southeastern Louisiana’s unique cultural heritage. With almost 2.1 million residents, including rural farming communities, metropolitan New Orleans, and the fishing, shrimping, crabbing, and oyster industries, the area is brimming with a diversity of people bound by a common interest: the desire for clean and healthy waters in the Pontchartrain Basin.

“The following 2011 New Orleans Film Festival noir short, The Contemptuous Ruby, was shot with this camera (Canon SD1100 IS point ‘n shoot) and a Zoom Handy Digital Recorder. The huge controversy surrounding this short and the positive reviews and our experience inspired us to develop it into a full length feature noir. It is slated for production in New Orleans, LA, in May, 2013. Headphones or stereo speakers will help you to appreciate the soundtrack!”

This short was shot during the 48 Hour Film Festival in New Orleans. However, I never entered in the 48 Hour Film Festival. I entered into the 2011 New Orleans Film Festival after the submission date and it was immediately accepted! It was a major “hit” with noir audiences in New Orleans. The entire project was shot on a Canon SD1100 IS and a Zoom Handy Digital Recorder. The 44,000 empty warehouse was 115 degrees in August and the plywood set was made moments before. We shot it Lars Von Trier style due to our low budget of less than $3,000. It is a bit “gritty” ;) Enjoy!
